Pendant cinq ans, Phil Woods s'est exilé en Europe pour fuir la scène américaine qui ne lui offrait plus alors que des enregistrements de jingles pour des spots publicitaires. En 1973, il revient aux Etats Unis, et son premier disque enregistré chez Muse porte un titre français Musique du Bois pour marquer tout l'intérêt retiré de cette expérience. Il avait alors joué avec Gordon Beck (ou George Gruntz), Henri Texier (ou Ron Matthewson) et Daniel Humair; aux Etats-Unis, la Musique du Bois est poussée par le pianiste Jaki Byard, le bassiste Richard Davis et le batteur Alan Dawson.

Il déclarait lui-même avec sa simplicité directe et habituelle qu'il ne se considérait pas comme un génie mais comme un soldat du jazz (Jazz Hot n°630, 2006) laissant toujours le premier rang à ceux qu'il reconnaissait comme les génies créateurs du jazz, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane…

En effet, si Charlie Parker et Dizzy Gillespie ont imposé le bebop, ouvrant une nouvelle voie du jazz, Sonny Stitt et Phil Woods ont creusé sans relâche le sillon que les deux innovateurs avaient initié. Et la récolte a été belle et abondante si l'on regarde l'apport de Phil Woods au jazz au cours de ses soixante années de carrière.

Sa discographie exceptionnelle (plus de 500 albums enregistrés en leader et sideman), à la fin de cet article, témoigne autant que sa belle interview dans Jazz Hot d'un talent hors norme doublé d'une modestie étonnante. Il incarnait l'artiste de jazz : lyrique, expressif, swinguant, exigeant, abordable, cultivé, inventif et ouvert: un modèle!

Phil Woods est né à Springfield, Massachussetts, le 2 novembre 1931. Peu de choses ont filtré de son enfance, et dans l'interview citée ci-dessus il déclare qu'il a reçu à 12 ans un saxo alto en héritage de son oncle. Son site officiel n'est guère explicite et liste seulement ses études musicales. Il étudie d'abord avec Harvey LaRose à Springfield, Mass, qui lui fait écouter et découvrir Benny Carter. Son professeur lui fait étudier une composition de Duke Ellington, et lorsque l'orchestre vient en ville, Johnny Hodges joue ce morceau en soliste. Ce sont  ses deux premières influences, Charlie Parker viendra plus tard. Mais c'est surtout New York qui l'attire. Il va souvent en ville en bus pour écouter des concerts. Il prend quelques cours avec Lennie Tristano et, en 1948, suit un semestre d'enseignement à la Manhattan School of Music, avant de suivre pendant quatre années l'enseignement de la Juilliard School of Music. A cette époque personne n'enseigne encore le jazz, et il n'y a même pas de cours de saxophone. Il est alors suivi par son ami Joe Lopes: «J'étudiais Bach, Beethoven, Brahms la journée et Bird, Dizzy, Thelonious Monk le soir.»

A la mort de Charlie Parker, il est vite baptisé le «new Bird», mais il ne sera pas un simple suiveur de son aîné, plutôt un disciple attentif à la mise en valeur de l'œuvre du maître, et un gardien de l'héritage mélodique de Charlie Parker et Benny Carter.

Il débute en 1954 dans l'orchestre de Charlie Barnett, puis joue dans le quintet de Gene Ramey avant de rejoindre George Wallington avec lequel il participe à la tournée des Birdland All Stars: il voyage alors dans le bus en compagnie de l'orchestre de Count Basie, le siège juste derrière Lester Young. Cette même année, il réalise ses premiers enregistrements en leader chez Prestige. Il a tout juste 23 ans et, deux ans plus tard, il amorce une collaboration avec le saxophoniste alto Gene Quill, avec lequel il participe à plusieurs séances d'enregistrement. L'une de ces sessions est publiée sous le titre Phil and Quill, et connaît un beau succès auprès du public. George Syran, Teddy Kotick et Nick Stabulas constituent le plus souvent la section rythmique, mais on sait que chez Prestige ce n'est pas toujours le leader qui dirige, mais Bob Weinstein qui veille à l'économie de la session et impose les musiciens qu'il a sous contrat. En 1956, Quincy Jones l'invite à participer à une tournée mondiale avec l'orchestre de Dizzy Gillespie financée par le Département d'Etat des Etats-Unis. Il revient en Europe en 1959 avec l'orchestre de Quincy Jones et, en 1962 il participe à la tournée de Benny Goodman en URSS.

Il signe pour une séance chez Columbia, termine son contrat chez Prestige et enregistre en octet  la session Rights of Swing. Cette pièce est conçue comme une composition classique et porte des titres inhabituels pour le jazz («Prélude», «Ballad», «Waltz», etc.). Elle a été supervisée par Nat Hentoff. A partir de ce moment, la situation du jazz devient préoccupante aux Etats-Unis. La lutte pour les droits civiques accroît les tensions raciales, le rock and roll devient peu à peu la musique de la jeunesse, les enregistrements se font plus rares et, pour survivre, Phil Woods doit passer des journées en studio pour enregistrer des jingles pour des publicités.

En 1967, il réalise Greek Cooking chez Impulse!, et quitte les Etats-Unis pour cinq ans. Il s'installe alors en Europe et monte son European Rhythm Machine avec George Gruntz (p), Henri Texier (b) et Daniel Humair (dm). Cette formation enregistre un disque en studio à Paris, et participe au Festival de Montreux en juin 1969. Il fait un aller-retour à New York, et enregistre avec l'orchestre de Chris Swanson deux albums chez Verve. Puis il revient en Europe; Gordon Beck remplace  George Gruntz, et rapidement Ron Mattewson remplace Henri Texier. Cette formation permet à Phil Woods d'explorer de nouveaux territoires. Il utilise un saxophone électrique, des claviers électriques; il considère alors avoir dépassé le bebop, mais il reste cependant dans le jazz. Pour Phil Woods (interview de juin 2006 dans Jazz Hot) l'Europe est beaucoup plus propice que les Etats-Unis pour les nouvelles directions de la musique.

Lors de son retour aux Etats-Unis, il enregistre le fameux Musique du Bois chez Muse, et ce titre en français indique l'importance que Phil Woods accorde à son séjour européen. Il reprend ses collaborations avec d'autres saxophonistes; Zoot Sims tout d'abord, avec lequel il a déjà collaboré dans les années soixante. Il fonde alors la nouvelle formation qui perdure depuis 1974 avec Steve Gilmore (b) et Bill Goodwin  (dm). Ils forment avec Phil Woods la base de la formation. Si Mike Mellilo est le premier, Hal Galper, Jim McNeely, Bill Charlap, Bill Mays se succèderont au piano.

Dans les années 80, Tom Harrell vient compléter la sonorité de l'ensemble, suivi plus tard par Hal Crook (tb) et Brian Lynch (tp). 

Ceci n'exclut pas diverses collaborations et un grand nombre d'enregistrements. La rencontre avec Paolo Piangiarelli et leur longue amitié a débouché sur la création du label Philology dédié au saxophoniste alto. Consacré en grande partie au bebop et à Charlie Parker, le label publie depuis 1980 de nombreux enregistrement de Phil Woods incluant concerts et édition d'inédits.

En Europe, outre Paolo Piangiarelli (label Philology), le saxophoniste alto George Robert et l'agent Jordi Suñol (organisateur de la tournée Bird with Strings… and More en 2005) avaient tissé des liens particuliers, professionnels et amicaux, avec Phil Woods.

Il n'a jamais cessé les collaborations avec d'autres saxophonistes, et l'un des derniers en date est l'enregistrement avec la jeune saxophoniste Grace Kelly.

Lors de son dernier concert au début du mois de septembre à Pittsburgh, il avait rendu hommage à l'album Charlie Parker With Strings, jouant avec une section rythmique locale et un orchestre à cordes. Il était monté sur scène avec une bonbonne d'oxygène sur scène et à la fin du concert, il avait annoncé qu'il se retirait définitivement de la scène. Souffrant d'emphysème, il est décédé le 29 septembre 2015.

Il avait épousé Chan Richardson-Parker, la dernière épouse de Charlie Parker, puis, après leur séparation, la sœur de Bill Goodwin, son batteur, Jill Goodwin, qui l'a accompagné tout au long d'une brillante carrière couronnée de quatre Grammy Awards, trois en petite formation et un en big band.
